A borough with many kinds of schools
Queens includes strong public high schools such as Townsend Harris, Bayside High School, Forest Hills High School, Francis Lewis High School and the Queens High School for the Sciences at York College, along with a large number of parochial and independent schools. The needs are varied: some students are aiming for a high SAT score; others need to pass a Regents exam with confidence; many need steady help in one or two courses. We start with a diagnostic and adapt the plan, so the work matches the student rather than the school's reputation. We are not affiliated with any school named here.
Colleges and pathways in Queens
Queens has several colleges, including Queens College, York College, LaGuardia Community College and St. John's University. CUNY School of Law is in Long Island City. Students heading to these schools and others should confirm each school's current admissions policies, as testing requirements vary and change. For law-school applicants, our LSAT preparation is built for the current exam without Logic Games and can be done online in the evenings, which helps if you are juggling work and a commute. For learners returning to school, see college and adult tutoring.
Elementary and middle school help
Strong early skills make everything later easier. Reading and writing tutoring works on fluency, comprehension and clear writing, and math tutoring covers number sense, fractions, pre-algebra and algebra. For students who are bright but disorganized, homework help and study skills builds a routine they can keep. After each session parents receive notes on what was practiced.
Skills for teens
Many Queens teens are curious about technology. Our Introduction to AI and web development tracks give them a place to explore it with a patient adult, and personal finance prepares them for their first paycheck. These tracks are educational and do not require previous experience.
Meeting in Queens
Online tutoring is the default and works anywhere in the borough, from Astoria and Long Island City to Flushing, Forest Hills, Jamaica and Bayside. For in-person sessions we can meet at your home or a public spot such as a branch of the Queens Public Library, which runs independently of the Manhattan and Brooklyn systems and has its own hours and policies. In-person sessions carry a travel fee based on location, agreed before booking.
A note on languages and backgrounds
Queens is one of the most linguistically diverse places in the country, and many students here speak another language at home. Our tutoring is conducted in English, and we are patient with students who are still building academic English. Reading, vocabulary and writing practice are often the most valuable part of the work, whatever the subject. If your child is classified as an English language learner at school, tell us at the start so that we can adjust the pace and the materials. We will also say honestly when a child would benefit from support we are not set up to give.
Price
Tutoring is $100 per hour for every subject. Five, ten and twenty-session packs lock in a weekly slot. You may also be interested in Brooklyn, Manhattan, the Bronx and Westchester.
